New to me Savage 99

I believe so. The checkering patterns don't match, and the hardware was a bit buggered up... as if it had been taken off factory wood, and put on the new pieces. It was pretty wood, and executed well... just not my cup of tea.

I agree, this is one good looking 99.

It's a good shooter, too. I love it. I bought it from a friend on sort of a fluke... I'd always wanted a 99, but unless one was dropped in my lap... well, my buddy dropped in my lap. He said it started to string shots as it got hot... I've not seen any of that. First time I shot it, I came home and put my Marlin 336 up for sale.

Here I am in WY, shooting steel dingers back in 2017. The peep sight is jacked out to the stops, so I was probably shooting at the 600yd target. Just a beautiful shooter... and that slick 99 action! When you do your part, it does it's part!

Not having done all the homework on brands, and mostly having been attracted to Savage through their generous offerings to southpaws, it's cool to hear that their products have been of good quality for a long time. I've worked at a few manufacturers of non-firearm widgets and gizmos over the years whose existence was more luck and in spite of themselves than due to the quality of their products, and seeing threads like this makes me want to source my own 99 just to see what all the fuss is about.

I'm sure those were hand hewed lengths of ancient forest fumed Oak, carefully carved into shape by a native woodworker, assembled with a bolt machined from a solid block of Unobtanium, and stained with Furled Yak oil. Or not. But they could be. You never know.
