Yes, that’s an unfortunate reality. Your best bet is to find a hobbyist close enough distance to you, who will help you. Someone who knows Savages as well as other firearms very well, but is not FFL gunsmith.

Or, does your State happen to have a State Firearms Owners Forum? I’m in Pennsylvania, and until very recently recently, we had PAFOA (Pennsylvania Firearms Owner’s Association). It was started in 2006 and only shutting down this year. So it went 20 years strong. Anyway, maybe check if your State has one and perhaps someone who knows what they’re doing working on firearms lives right near you & would be happy to help another enthusiast.

Yes,we have a state firearms forum .
I will try to reach out locally .
I belong to an older sportsman club with many smiths and will check in there.
We have a very active 600 yard club and I know many of them do their own work .
But many hobbyist are reluctant to work on others rifles,a liability issue I suppose .

Yeah, I know. And it makes sense today with how many are so SUE-crazy! I have no problem helping other with there firearms. Thing is, I never do, and HAVE NEVER charged a red cent to help other enthusiasts with their firearms. It’s a hobby for me, and favor to others. There are some rules to it. Everything must be face to face with the person there the whole time. I’m not an FFL, so I certainly would never take a firearm by mail(shipping), nor would I ever keep a firearm without the owner there the whole time.

I simply enjoy helping other enthusiasts where I can. For instance, helping a person assemble an AR15. Something that a GS will charge them $60, that I can help them do in 15-20 minutes. Same goes for Headspacing/torquing a Barrel Nut-Barrel, like Savage. Or installing scope bases/rungs and bore sighting a scope. Trigger jobs have been my speciality for many years. They are just fun for me. Or little jobs like this, you have. Removing/reinstalling & modifying Extractor/Ejector. These are all things I know and like to share with other enthusiasts. And I’m not alone. I don’t do any really anymore. (Disabled & failing health). Funny thing, it’s basically why Jim banned me on SavageShooters. I did quite a few trigger jobs for people & he didn’t like that. Guess he thought I was making money. But uhh.. nope. People would send me just their trigger parts and I’d prep the surfaces & change out springs, whatnot. Never changed a dime. Like I said. Shoot! I never even charged return shipping! It was a curtesy for other Savage builders like me. But anyway.

I mount scopes for friends and family myself .
I have the proper tools and experience to do it correctly .
I also make them watch so I turn it into a learning session for them .
Some are amazed at how simple it is to do if you pay attention to what you are doing .The old forum is what brought me here also.
Was lots of good people there .

Indeed. Many things are like that. I bet if someone were to help you a bit with this you’d think it easy after the fact as well. It’s just nature of things. Ya don’t know what ya know, until ya know it!
