M14 and iron sights.

Been an optic shooter for years with my M14s. Recently a gent on another forum asked me to try irons again at 100yds. These are the results of a couple days shooting out on my home range. Rifle is a TRW repro in a laminated stock I picked up from Ole Hook's estate. Sights are NM and the barrel is USGI standard contour chrome lined 22". Ammo is MEN nato German surplus from the stash. I found I shot best without my glasses. Using a .042 rear aperture. Date on first target is supposed to be 6/1/26. At 78, the thinker grinds sometimes. Whatta Hobby!

Ahh, the good ol’ Steel jacketed, Cupro Nickel German Ammo! And are those corrosive BERDAN primer I see?

Berdan yes, corrosive no. Been re-loading them for decades. Tough getting the right Berdan primers these days. Still have a few cases of the old ammo left from when it was .20 per rnd. Light years ahead of any LC I have shot. Whatta Hobby!

Ahh, OK. Just thought all older Berdans were corrosive, but cool!

Interesting note: I was checking that headstamp & came across one of YOUR PICS in a thread from M14 Forum, from a few years ago. That guy Tony banned you in the same way Jim banned me! Seemed like you were helpful, and well liked there Art. But one of the forum leadership, oddly enough, seeming to have some affection for another member, & a bone to pick with you, became ANGRY with you & banned you on the spot! Even giving the himself a back pat with the “I Warned You!” (Man oh man does that take me back to my own happening!) Even when other members were sticking up for you & POSTING you should not be banned, he would not relent. It was like reading my own story when Jim Banned me at SavageShooters. Honestly, I can’t stand when forum leadership go on power trips! The ones who dish it out, but can’t take it. This is why a MOD should remain completely neutral, OR simply NOT try to punishpeople and show their hypocrisy.

I’m sorry that happened to you there. Your length of time & post count reflected your enjoyment participating there. Until some PowerTripping Mod had to “show you who the boss was”. (Again, the hypocrisy! Honestly! Ya know?)

I have nothing but good to say about Art. Enjoyed his and others posts on M 14 Forum for years. I left the M14 Forum because of the head strong mods. That young one...."Ben"......holy smokes. What were they thinking?

Thanks guys. It's funny, a gent by the name of Bill Ricca found me on the FAL files and asked me to join the M14 forum to share my knowledge of the M14. All I did was provide the best information I could. Another gent, Art Luppino was banned about the same time for challenging TonyBen's knowledge of the rifle. Jealousy, I think, had more to do with what went on than anything else. An old photo of some of my M14 collection. Have added a few since. Whatta Hobby!

I spent many an hour sitting on top of the sail during swim call and man overboard drills. We used a dummy in a set of coveralls, with air filled pastic bags inside for the rescue. I would have to sink the dummy when we were done.

Up until the late 90's the M14 was still issued as a standard issue watch weapon. I was a SAMI (0812) at Miramar Station Weaps Range/Armory DIV late 80's early 90's. Went to CVN73 Weaps Dept after that (Plank Owner/Original Crew) and the Armory still had M14's. There were very few M16 platforms in use by regular Navy Commands at that time. Heck I never saw a Navy issued M9 issued to a regular Navy Command, we were still issuing and instructing on the 1911.

M14's are still issued, but mostly in a DMR or PSR variation. Standard issue M14's are still in ship Armories for line throwing though. The M4 has taken over as a standard issue. My youngest Son is in the Navy. He graduated ECS a month or so back. His issue weapons are M4 w/ACOG and M18. He deploys 0300 tomorrow morning.

My Son recently completed a 2 year tour of duty with United States Navy Ceremonial Guard. He was selected out of Boot Camp, and his contracted rate training was placed on hold. Initial training you build your own M1. Even refinishing the wood and metal furniture. That is YOUR rifle for your tour. The M14 is used for Firing Party. To earn a spot on that Platoon you need to pass the field strip qual....disassembly and reassembly withing one (01) minute. Each piece laid precisely the same space apart in correct placement. When he graduated from Marching Platoon (sort of the basic training for Ceremonial Guard) and earned his white rope he put in for Firing Party. You are allowed to leave base (JBAB in Wash DC) after graduation. He took weekend liberty and came home as we are only a couple hours away. He used my M1A to practice the qual. He aced it and the instructors were amazed.....hey Daddy knows the M14 in and out and just happened to have a couple on hand . His time with Firing Party was short lived. He's a big boy and Casket Bearers Platoon was short. So they moved him there.

Aside from participating as a Casket Bearer in 936 Navy Funerals and Dignified Transfers, he also was selected to stand Guard over former POTUS Carter's casket lying in state and POTUS Trump Inauguration Military Pass In Review.

Yes Sir he has. Since then he's completed his rate training school in Port Hueneme, CA, then ECS (Expeditionary Combat School) in Gulfport MS, is now assigned to NMCB 1 and currently standing by for final barracks room inspection then off to the tarmac to load up for his first deployment. HOOYAH!
