Seeking Advice about a 1966 Savage 110CL

From some quick research, it looks like the action screw spacing would be the same, however it would require milling out more of a relief in the action to create space to insert the magazine. That would be a little more invasive than I think I want to get. With the equipment I have available.

Yes, Long Actions have always been the same screw spacing. It’s never changed. And while yes, some do require machining, some do not. I know that there are cases where they simply popped off the mag box & used it in the Centerfeed Stock they chose. However, yes, I understand your limitations and actually wasn’t instructing you to do so. Simply stating my thoughts for posterity sake.

Your best bet is to go with a Staggerfeed blind mag, from Boyd’s. as your rifle is already using a trap door, it appears?

Im not sure I’ve seen that many lefty bolt actions in one collection before .

I've been buying left handed guns since 1975 and actually have a few more.

There's nothing wrong with a properly bedded wood stock. My serious big game hunting rifles are wood or laminate.

The 30.06 offers you the most versatility since you're aiming for antelope and elk. Load the Barnes 130 grain TTSX at 3,300 fps and you have a flat shooting antelope rig with less recoil than the 150 - 180 grain bullets. Load it with any premium quality 180 grain bullet for a hammer for elk.

How many of you WRONG-Han…., I mean, “Left”- handed shooters are there here? Good grief! Didn’t the Nuns SMACK all your hands enough when you used your Left, in order to switch? I mean, I’m Right handed, and even when I taught myself to shoot with my Left, I PUNCHED myself in the face for using it! Finally, God sorted it out & paralyzed my left arm/hand in 2014.

This one has the detachable magazine with the button on the side to release it. It does not have a hinged floor plate.

Ahh, gotchya. Wasn’t sure, but now when I enlarge the photo I can see the Mag outline.

Anyway, same applies. Can do as you first outlined. Simply will need to inlet the stock properly.

I've fixed many a bad barrel by replacing the scope......honestly, I just check the optics and work on some hand loads. If you wanna build a rifle, start with something current. There is more aftermarket support.

Yeah I’ve tried a couple of scopes on the rifle. I’m not a hand loader so that really isn't an option for me at this time. I agree there is more support for a newer rifle! I do like the idea of taking something old and fixing it up and using it. I love doing that with old tools. Gives things new life! I appreciate the input.

The nuns used to tape my left hand closed after whacking me with a ruler didn't work. My handwriting is horrible with either hand.

Yeah I’ve tried a couple of scopes on the rifle. I’m not a hand loader so that really isn't an option for me at this time. I agree there is more support for a newer rifle! I do like the idea of taking something old and fixing it up and using it. I love doing that with old tools. Gives things new life! I appreciate the input.

I agree. It’s fun taking something older and fixing it up. Whether in factory form or modernizing.

But you really don’t have to go crazy. A barrel & Boyds stock would breath new life into it I think.

I have seen that the new 110 trail blazer rifles are retailing for just over $600 which is what it would cost to get a barrel, go/no go gauges, a barrel nut wrench.

Is the accuracy that is expected from a Shillen or Criterion barrel worth the price or am I better off purchasing a new rifle? Strictly speaking from a performance standpoint.

Unfortunately, you’ll have to answer that yourself. Given a sound Action, Bolt head, etc., a new aftermarket Stainless match barrel is going to produce exceptional results.

However, a new 110 gives all the modern advantages. Although, factory Savage Barrels are not offer Criterion/Shilen precision.

1st question to ask yourself. Is this going to be a one-time experience or do you see more swaps down the road? If a one-time event then it may be more prudent to look new. If you foresee a few changes then it may be worth the expense of buying the gages, wrenches and maybe a barrel vise.

Mine have already paid for themselves.
