Have heard various reports of the SST's effectiveness at various impact velocities.
Thought a little experimenting was in order so made up a little test to see what they'd do.
Bullet is a .308 Hornady 125gr SST. Medium was a bale of newspapers bound together by ratchet straps to keep everything tight. Picture a stack of papers about 16" high laid on it's side and and soaked in water for approximately 48hrs.
Distance was 300 yards.
According to Hornady's ballistics calculator with a muzzle velocity of 2325fps when the bullet hit the stack it was going appr 1585fps with a retained energy of 697ft/lbs. Retained weight was 100-100gr.
As a reference Federal 357 Magnum +P ammo with a 125gr bullet has a muzzle velocity/energy of 1440fps and 575ft/lbs.
Penetration was appr 8-10" sorry I didn't get a pic of the "test medium" I was too excited to take it apart and fish out the bullets. Obviously not scientific but thought it may be interesting.
