I found out about the Model 25 issues after I purchased a 17 Hornet version .
Mine has already been back to the factory once after the first range trip.
Extracts just fine but falters on ejecting .
A little better after the factory trip but still does it at least once every magazine.
No explanation from the factory when it was returned, just a note saying 'some parts replaced'.
And since I have to pay to return it I am not going to waste another $50 and having the same result.
Shame too since it is the most accurate rifle I have owned so far.
Frustrating and Embarrassing to have to tip the rifle sideways after every shot so the empty case can fall out of the magazine well .
Has anybody figured out a cause or cure for this .
Can this be as simple as a spring or plunger modification .
I am not a gunsmith but am not afraid to tackle simple R&R .

I'm not familiar with the Model 25, but most ejection problems with a 10 /110 Savage can be solved by working the bolt quickly.
Most people operate their bolt pretty slow, and that will allow the case mouth to bounce off the wall of the action once the case clears the barrel upon extraction. The case then falls off the bolt head since the extractor cannot hold the case once the ejector is out all the way.

Okay , this is my first Savage bolt gun .
I did have a 24 many years ago but different creature.
Headed to the range today when it warms up .
I will speed things up a bit and hope that's all it is .

Hope the range trip goes well OP. Try to imagine you’re trying to throw the brass out with the bolt handle.

If it still fails even when you're being aggressive, pay attention to exactly where the case is landing. if it’s hitting the side of the scope turret and falling back in, you might just need to rotate your scope or use slightly higher rings

Life got in the way.
And now we have heavy rain for the next couple of days .
Just want to get this sorted out before I invest in a good stock for it .
Its a Walking Varminter and the perfect hunting rifle for little things.

from my experience, Savage ejectors usually rely on a snappy pull to get the brass clear of the port. If you baby the bolt, the case just kind of flops off the extractor.

Give it a firm, fast cycle today and see if that 17 Hornet brass finally takes flight

Managed to make it to the range today.
Tried the fast and quick method.
Made a big difference but still got the occasional failure to eject.
Looks like I'll just have to live with it.
Sure doesn't make me want to purchase another product from in the future .
And it is a shooter so I'll keep it and hopefully run into a CZ 527 like I wanted in the first place . :)

As a hand loader I like to pick my brass out of the action. I like the way savages give you control over how far the brass ejects. Pull that handle faster, it will chuck that brass out of the way.

Normally I practice that with my Remington also but the action is so small I can't reach into the mag well.
Have to tip the rifle sideways for the brass to fall out .
Kinda clunky way of doing it .

Ok, so in the case of the model 110, there are some easy & inexpensive things to do which will cure ejection issues besides operating the bolt like a madman. LOL!😂

As for the Model 25, this video shows the problem. The Extractor is getting “Bumped” off so it only holding on to the rim by a few Thous. This guy says the fix is removing barrel material. I also found a post instructing to cut the Extractor groove depth deeper. However, it’s not specific to how much.
I don’t have a Model 25 in 17/22 Hornet to try, so I don’t know.

OP: I recommend looking at yours to verify this happening. And basically, you need to STOP this from happening. I know it sounds funny, but that really is the long & short of it. Firearms repair is simply a matter of verifying what is causing the condition, and STOPPING the cause.

Here is the thread and a viable fix. Unfortunately, it requires machining.

I haven't read the thread, but after dealing with similar issues with my Model 12, it seems to me this is a feature, not a bug. My Mauser 98s aren't much different.

If you're trying to reload in a hurry to stop a charging rhino, you're gonna operate the bolt like you mean it, the empty case is gonna get thrown clear, and reloading the chamber will go as expected.

But if you're shooting off a bench at your range, and you want to save your cases to handload and don't want them stepped upon by the guy two benches down from you, you're gonna operate the bolt gingerly, and the empty is either gonna drop gently to the bench beside you or wait patiently for you to fish it out.

What's not to like?

That’s quite an optimistic way of looking at it. However, the very seasoned Savage aficionados here can assure you, it indeed is NOT a feature. On the 10/110 /12 Actions, it’s an easy fix. Different altogether from the Model 25, which really only exhibits the issue in 17 & 22 Hornet cartridges, specifically. And unlike the Model 10/110/12 Actions experiencing this, it’s not so easily overcome in the Model 25 by a more rigorous Bolt racking operation.

That said, if you are quite content with your Model 12 exhibiting the same, KUDOS!😊

My issue is that it doesn't even drop them on the bench, they just fall into the magazine well .
Very inconvenient and unacceptable..

Yes, that is a reoccurring sentiment to model 25 owners in 17/22 Hornet. And it’s not even easy to fish them out if the Action! It’s like they STICK in a crevice and ya can’t get a finger on the edge. LOL! Super annoying, I know.

I'm extremely late to this thread. Did the OP fix the issue?

The model 25 bolt/action is very different from the 110/11/12/etc...

On mine, there was a feeding issue which was a common thing for the first run. I did send it back to Savage and it was returned flawless. It became my favorite predator rifle and has taken an incredible amount of fox and some close yotes. Not too shabby of a varmint rig either...ground grizz out to 100 or so had no chance.

It is still an issue that I have learned to live with .
Shame since other than that it is a decent rifle .

Is your extractor too far out/loose? Or even too tight?

Take your bolt out. Stick a empty case on it. Does the extractor hold it onto the bolt face? Does it just fall out? Was it difficult to put the case on? May just need some fitting/tuning.

I didn't read link on post#11 so apologies if this was mentioned on there. It's an easy extractor test.

I pretty much went over this, and linked a video showing the problem as well. It needs modification to the bolt head/extractor. Unfortunately there is no Enhanced Extractor available, so the owner must enhance their own.

I watched the video, and yes, have to agree, you'd either have to enhance or live with it.

I will just have to live with it .
I don't have access to a machine shop or a gunsmith that will do custom work .

I still think you should try the extractor function test. Sure sounds like it is too loose. I've see 25's (17 Hornets) of the first run do that. Just needed the extractor tightened a bit. No machine shop or custom work involved to fix it.

The extractor isn’t loose. The Hornet has a very thick Rim on the case & the model 25 extractor has a combination of not enough tension & slightly too shallow room between the hook bolt face. So the extraxtor hook tends to hang up on the side of the Rim. Then, as seen in the video, the right movement will allow the case head to drop in the bolt face correctly.

OP, it may not need much at all. You might try modifying the extractor for proper clearance over the case head Rim. What is known as an Enhanced Extractor. A file or stone if you have one, & some sandpaper is all that is required. Below is a pic of the Extractor. I put an arrow & highlighted in red the Hook & Groove for the Extraxtor. I would start & removing this & first checking the fit with the Rim of a Hornet case. I’m betting besides it being super shallow, it’s also juuust wide enough fir the width of the Rim. If so, I would both file/stone the depth slightly deeper & also open the channel diameter a few thous.

Thank you for that info .
Gives me a starting place to look into .

Looked into the fix and it is above my pay grade .
Spent 1/2 hour looking at videos and still didn't find any on how to disassemble the extractor .
I am not a gunsmith so I will leave it alone .
Last time I tried to do major work on a firearm it had to go to a shop to fix what I attempted to 'fix'.
I know my limits .
Thanks for all the help.

No, that’s the right decision. Always good to verify one’s limit and not tempt fate. LOL! It’s times like this I wish we lived close enough so you could come visit me. I could get it checked out & diagnosed in minutes. And maybe an hour or less fixing. And I’d do it as a favor. Maybe someone else here who has the ability, could take a look at it. Might try checking around if another member lives close enough you could meet up? Anyway.. good luck.

Appreciate the thought.
I am not afraid to tackle some projects, when I was in machinist school years ago I shortened the barrel and trued the action on a rifle I still use .
Even remounted the factory sights . :)
But I had full access to a machine shop .

Put out feelers but we have a drought of gunsmiths around here.
All the gunshops did away with their own smiths long time ago .
A few offer scope mounting but thats about it anymore .
All I have been able to find are full blown custom makers .
not worth their time to tackle simple jobs anymore .
sad state of affairs anymore .:(
