Axis fail to fire fix ?

Afternoon . I have a good friend i hunt with that got a newer savage axis

its surprisingly accurate with factory winchester power points . But the last 2 hunts of last year it failed to fire both times . With different bullets , not the same one ,Just a light dent in the primer .
I took bolt apart .its clean , dry but clean .. not impressed with the spring set up . Feels kinda light honestly.
So may be just me ?
Firing pin has some scaring on it like its been rubbing or draging . I dodna Google search for a upgrade firimg pin spring , nothing in stock ... now what ?
Maby polish the pin good use a light grease as I do on my custom guns ?

Open to suggestions or places to get parts . Really dont wana see him miss another one this commimg year

First, is it an Axis 1 or Axis 2 with the Accutrigger? If Accutrigger, make certain he’s not tripping the lockout Accutrigger Saftey function. If no, check the firing pin spring. Is it a 1-piece spring, or the 2-spring setup like this picture below. Also check if the spring is collapsed like the top springs in the pic, compared to new springs.


If broken spring, or they are collapsed, it needs a new spring setup. I recommend the spring setup from Lumley. Has different weight springs & Delrin Isolators instead of the center coil in between. Or, can use the springs with an Axis Bolt Lift kit. Either way, FP striker energy is increased. There are several other tricks that require a bit more DIY knowledge. Polishing components & such. Also check the FP pin protrusion is .040” MAX! Any more is simply STOPPING the pin fall(travel), which saps energy.

So it does have the accutrigger . Ill have to check if the axis 1 or 2 when I get home . It is a 2 piece spring like in the picture you showed . I will get more pics when I get home . How do I check to see if hes is tripping the lockout Accutrigger Saftey function ?

When it failed to fire the center accutrigger blade would have been locked. So basically the trigger blade locks the trigger before it prematurely fires. In this instance there is often a lightly dented primer like you mention.

Nothing needs ”fixed”, if this is the culprit. However, your initial explanation leads me to believe it’s firing pin related. Causing light primer strikes.

What is your firearms mechanical DIY level, would you say? For instance, although I’m not professional gunsmith with an FFL, I’ve been modifying, diagnosing & repairing & building firearms for over 25yrs. What would you say your comfort level is in doing minor diagnosis/repair?

Very skilled , have done machine work for a long time . Iv build a lot of rifles. All off rem 700 and sako action tho. Never messed with any savage stuff

Ok, great. Yeah, do as I instructed in my first post. It’s easy to take apart. Take the Bolt out, decock the firing pin. (Drop the round pin down the ramp in the bolt sleeve), and use an Allen wrench to loosen the BAS (Bolt Assembly Screw) in the back.

Follow this video, but you don’t need to disassemble the bolt head. Just the firing pin & spring assembly.
