Sear wear

Have any of you ever worn out a sear? Like so much it pretty much loses adjustment capabilities? I just did.

So last fall I was in Wyoming shooting every prarie dog I could get in my scope. Gun is a savage dual port target action sporting a Criterion 6br barrel. Using stock target accutrigger. After about 200 or so rounds it all of a sudden started dropping the sear. I pulled it apart and added some pull weight to it till it would fire constantly, but the pull wt was now over 2 lbs! So I shot another 100 rounds or so with it the next day or so and then put it away.
When I got back home I swapped in a new target accutrigger assembly I had sitting here(the trigger assy sold by Gunshack). That made no change, which I expected. The lowest pull wt I could get was 1.5lbs but didn’t trust it. Then I swapped in a spare SAV1 trigger. Same result. I could easily set it to be safe but the pull wt was 1.5-2lbs. I did all this because Gunshack was sold out of their target sear. After that I put the gun away.

Fast forward to about 2 wks ago, Gunshack got the sear in stock so I ordered one. There was so much difference in the sear length that I had to back off the sav1 sear engagement about 2 turns! Reset it and Walla, right back to a tad less than a pound. Just where I like it.
I know the factory sear is filed to fit to get the light pull wt, so I expected a little difference. The target sears from Gunshack have not been filed so they will take a while to wear in.
I have shot a ton of rounds thru savage rifles and this is the first sear that I had to replace just cause it was worn out.

Here’s a pic of how far I had to adjust the rear spring just to get consistent safe firing with the bad sear! If I backed it off at all from this it would trip …lol crazy!

This is good to know. I filed my sear some in my Axis. I did have a slam fire with it too. I had too light of a spring in it.

Simply being worn down, does not make for a light trigger pull. Property Sear/Trigger mating surface release angles are what provides smooth and light break. However, it’s only one aspect of trigger performance. Using that Sear with any trigger would likely result in the same issue.

That would be my educated assertion anyway.

I checked my Axis trigger pull today. 1 lb 2 oz. Average out of 5 pulls.

Yup. The regular Accutrigger can be taken to close to 1lb. Some stoning/polishing, different springs. And yes, the lighter one goes, the more easily they can encounter striker follow. (Slam Fire). Although, with the Accutrigger, it will NEVER fire like that, thanks to the safety blade. And even with a standard trigger, a slam fire does not always result in a discharge. Many times only a light primer strike is the result. Unfortunately it’s simply the nature of extremely light triggers. In actuality, professional shooters do not use triggers so light, just thinking about them makes it trip! I see people online constantly chasing triggers closer & closer to 1lb. The under 1lb., and even SINGLE digit OUNCE triggers! But then I read articles about certain professionals. Guys who’s JOB it is to pull a trigger; very gifted shooters. And they aren’t using these triggers with single digit OUNCE pulls. Nor are professional snipers using their OUNCE pull triggers. There is the argument these single digit triggers are merely a crutch, to cover for bad trigger discipline/control. While I certainly do not want a heavy trigger. Especially on a target rifle, I do also believe a trigger can be too light. And just in case anyone is ready to speak of their 3-ounce trigger that they are about to cock and then bounce, jounce & trounce the rifle, bang the buttstock and throw the it off a cliff WITHOUT the Sear tripping, please don’t bother With all due respect, NO, it can’t!
