The local outdoor range which I shoot at and am also a PT Range Officer Has been holding a winter centerfire rifle league for the last 10 years and it has been a blast to participate in. I've shot it the last 4 years and each year I have improved and moved up the ladder. Started with a Savage Model 10 223 and then last year moved up to a modified Model 110 Switchback with a Shilen 6ARC Match barrel and with it moved up the ladder again. Then if I only could have eliminated a few mistakes and a few rushed shots, I could have moved up further.
Wel for some reason there was a major shake-up with the league manager and range management and the league manager walked out. He did at the time pass this position off to one of his buddies who assured us all that we would continue, and the league would go on. Over the summer and fall I tried contacting the new manager to see where things stood and didn't get much response and what I did get was rather vague. Well, this league normally kicks off the first week in January. By November there was still nothing definitive and many of the members and the range management started quizzing me as I was working the range and they thought I would be in the know. WONG!
Right around Thanksgiving we all got a group email from the "new" manager that he was now going to have to have another unscheduled surgery and would be unable to serve as manager or even shoot the league this winter. Would anyone like to step up and take over the league. Great, Last-minute bomb. So, I contacted him again to find more info, received a rather terse response and was told he would give me what he had. Which amounted to about zero.
After that I contacted the previous manager, as we were still on pretty good speaking terms, to pick his brain and inform him that I would be taking the reins and to see if he would provide any guidance. We met and sat for lunch and finally got around to talking about the league. This is the point where he informed me that most of the written program we were using was his proprietary intellectual property and he was not going to allow us to use it. Also, a number of the targets where shooting are his design and copywrited and that we could not use them either. So, basically, we were at square one and had to rebuild the whole league with only about 6 weeks to go before we normally start..
Well, that is what I've been up to since Thanksgiving. This league normally runs about 20 members and many also were not returning, One of the regulars and past 3-time winner expressed his feeling that the league had run its course and it was time to let it go. Another couple moved on to a F CLass facility and another family group also moved on, I believe it was cost involved. So we lost a good deal of members aside from the disgruntled members.
Where I am today, I have a new email account set up for the league business, recruited new shooters and now have 13 involved, Have a good start on a new operational program, targets that were not proprietary that we used previously and enough other new targets to cover the 10 weeks we run. This league basically rans 10 weeks, shooting a different target each week and very distance from 100 to 300yards. The first 3 weeks we traditionally shoot IBS Hunter 100 ,200 and 300yd targets. The targets I have picked are now moving from shooting more group type targets to one or two shot sub-targets, presenting more of a hunting situation with one shot and one follow-up shot.
It's been a lot of work, a bit stressful yet rewarding at the same time. Just hoping everyone has an enjoyable time. Still have to get out and start shooting my Savage and getting some valuable trigger time.
