Attached are pictures of my 6 ‘most accurate’ Savage 110 rifles and their stocks or chassis.



The 12 LRP 6.5mm CM with a 26-inch 1:8 twist factory barrel with an 8-32x56mm Night Force Benchrest scope with an NP2DD reticle came with a HS Precision Stock and has a lower bolt release.



The 10 FCP-K .308 with a 24-inch 1:10 twist factory barrel with a muzzle brake with an 8-32x56mm Night Force Benchrest scope with an NP2DD reticle still is mounted in the original factory stock and has a lower bolt release.



Four of the rifles have an MDT chassis (3 Oryx and 1 LSS), three of which have upper bolt releases.

  • My most accurate rifle, the 12 FV .223 with a 26-inch 1:7 twist Shilen Select Match 416R SS barrel is in the MDT LSS chassis with a Leupold 45X Competition stock with a target reticle.
  • The 12 FV 6.5mm CM rifle has a 28-inch 1:8 twist Shilen Select Match 416R SS barrel in an Oryx chassis with a 12-42x56mm Night Force Benchrest scope with an NP2DD reticle.
  • The 10 FP .308 with a 24-inch 1:10 twist factory replacement threaded barrel in an Oryx chassis with an 8-32x56mm Night Force Benchrest scope with an Mil Dot reticle.
  • The 11 VT .22-250 with a 24-inch 1:12 twist factory barrel in an Oryx chassis with an 8-32x56mm Night Force Benchrest scope with an NP2DD reticle with a lower bolt release.

My two original Oryx chassis have a slot in the side to operate the lower bolt release and I moved one of my 2 original Oryx chassis to the 11 VT .22-250 when I got the MDT LSS chassis for the 12 FV .223.

The newer Oryx chassis and MDT LSS chassis don’t have an access port to operate a lower bolt release.

I would have to take the chassis off the 6.5mm CM 28-inch rifle and replace it with either a new MDT chassis or a new Oryx chassis to make the older model Oryx stock with the slot available for the 10 FCP-K.

My data shows that the Oryx stock would improve accuracy compared to a factory stock, but the experience with the 11 VT proves that it is very cumbersome to remove and replace the bolt using a screwdriver in the slot on the lower bolt release rifle, so I am not rushing to move the remaining original Oryx chassis with the slot to the 10 FCP-K.

That is a Sinclair Gen 3 F-class bipod.
I have two of them. The black one is about 15 years old. The silver one is about 3 years newer.
They have had a whole lot of use - probably about 50,000 rounds between them.
I find that these bipods create a very stable platform on a bench with the Protektor rear rest. There is none of the hop that I have found with other bipods if you don't front load them.
These actually provide a better front rest than my very expensive adjustable front rest that cost about 3X as much.
These bipods also provide a very solid front rest when shooting prone, but I am getting too old to do that anymore.
As you can see from the pictures of the 12 LRP that were taken 10 years ago and the pictures of the 11 VT that were taken a few months ago, the Protektor rear rest has had a lot of use but is still going strong.
 
I only have one chassis rifle. A left-handed, Model 11 (large shank) in an Ultradyne chassis chambered 22-250AI with a 1:10" twist Pac-Nor ultramatch, 3 groove barrel for whacking varmits to 500 yards.

Did your accuracy improve after putting it in a chassis? Did you consider a barrel or action block?
 
I don't know if you were asking me, but my chassis changes all improved accuracy to some degree.

The 2017 12 FVs showed improvement because their factory stocks didn't have the aluminum stiffening rod that most other 110 factory stocks had.
They were originally hidden mag chassis, the same that was on my original 2008 10 FP Law Enforcement model.
The 12 FV .223 was later switched to an MDT LSS chassis that was on sale and I liked the look. There was no appreciable improvement in accuracy with the LSS versus the Oryx it replaced, only 0.003 improvement in average group size, but, to me, the LSS looks better. Its Oryx chassis was used to upgrade the 11 VT. .22-250 because it had slot to allow the operation of the lower bolt release that was in front of the trigger guard.

The 12 FV .223 overall group averages improved by 19.8% with the factory barrel.
The 12 FV 6.5mm CM overall groups averages improved by 11% with the factory. That was a surprise since the factory stock literally twisted from the recoil, so the improvement might be masked by my problems with recoil control that comes with age.
The 11 VT .22-250 overall group averages improved by 32.7%. (I didn't expect that much improvement, but the original stock was light and too short for me, so that possibly increased the improvement with the longer and heavier chassis.)
The 12 FP .308 is shooting better but there aren't enough groups yet to provide any valid comparison between the stock and the chassis. It started with a factory stock like the 12 FVs, and I changed to a replacement adjustable stock when I replaced the factory barrel with another factory barrel. That may have negated any major change in overall group average. The heavier adjustable stock retained the hidden mag, but its rigidity, weight and adjustability improved the accuracy.

I would be the first to admit that the HS Precision stock I have on my 12 LRP 6.5mm CM (similar to the ones supplied with the factory LRPs and LPRV rifles) is a very good stock and I am in no rush to change it to a chassis.

I also admit that a good replacement stock that fits the shooter and provides rigidity will probably also improve accuracy.
In fact, for a hunting rifle, I would never choose an aluminum chassis. They are just too heavy. The 12 FVs now weigh around 15 lbs.
Even the relatively light 11 VT .22-250 now weighs over 11 lbs.
That might be OK for shooting prone or from a tripod, but it would be a load to carry on a stalk or lug to and from a blind or tree-stand.
 
I don’t think there is a more highly custom Savage than my own.

It has a host of Titanium parts, a few I machined myself, the Chassis is the only one you’re likely to see, a Mirage ERL Chassis. And a 28” Criterion barrel in 260AI.


 
CF....one of the pics you included, a blued, fluted barrel on a grey stock, looks like the barrel is not recessed into the end of the stock but literally sets above it. I purchased an Orxyx, mine did that and I sent it back....did I make a mistake in thinking it wasnt right?
 
All the MDT chassis do that as far as I know - I have 4 Oryx chassis, one LSS XL chassis and one ACC Premier chassis.
They provide lots of clearance for bull barrels, but if you have a barrel format that is a lot thinner, it may look like it is really hanging in thin air.
Each of my 6 Savage rifles that are mounted in a MDT chassis shoot great. Four are varmint contours, two are bulls - 1 inch at the muzzle.
The blue fluted barrel in the grey chassis is a .308 model 10 FP with a varmint barrel contour that is a Savage target barrel that replaced the original that I shot out - around .82 inches at the muzzle.
All shoot better than in the factory stocks, but I think the extra length added by those 4 butt spacers cause most of the improvement.
The stocks are incredibly rigid and the barrels are totally free of any contact with the chassis from the barrel lug to the muzzle.
