110 short action

I have a 110FP in 308W I bought in the mid 1990s. Im told it is a short action 110 because it was chambered in 308. It sure appears to be built on a long action. That said, I dont think you'd ever get 3006 shells into the magazine well. So is it true that even though the top ejection port and bolt look like long action, the bottom cutouts are different sizes on a 110 action? I was under the impression that all short actions were 2 digit models.

My 10 FP 0.308 purchased in 2008 is a short action. The FP designation shows it is a Law Enforcement model, and the two digit designation indicates it is a short action. The lack of a C in the designation shows it had a hidden mag. The C indicated a mag. I also have a 10 FCP-K purchased in 2010 has a mag and also the -K shows it has a muzzle brake.
Both have the standard short action bolt pattern.
If you got yours in the 1990s it might have been built with a long action since that is 18 years older than mine, but the model 110 designation would indicate, from the designator, that it chould have been built as a short action on a long action chassis.
You might check the spacing of the front bolt and the action bolt in front of the trigger guard.
If it is less than 4.6 inches, it is a short action.
The long action bolts are over 5 inches apart.

Both of these 110 FPs in lower photo are long action as purchased in the 90s. One is .308 and the other .223. They have gone through some extensive changes as the years go by since this photo was taken. Whatta Hobby!

I suspected that the older Savages had some long actions that were modified to accommodate short action calibers.
Sort of like the Short actions that have spacers in the bolt and mag to make extracting .223 rounds from a short action length mag and load smoothly into the barrel.
I just never had the experience with Savages prior to 2008 and only bought new ones since then, so I had never seen one.

Just a hair over 5" with the 3.8" opening in the receiver.

Thanks. Love chatting about these things. I bought a couple of Win Mod 70s at the same time with the .308 and .223 calibers. Mounted the same model Leupld 6.5-20s with target dot reticles on all 4 for the halibut. Whatta Hobby!

They did. There was a good FAQ topic on SS that showed how it was done. Bought my wife a 7-08 in '87 or '88. It was a long action with a short action mag and a long "tab" on the front baffle to restrict ejection stroke. Worked well as I recall and our DIL has it now.

Fred at SharpShooter Supply accurized the action, installed his match trigger and put it in one of his bag rider stocks. He did not enjoy doing that one off stock for that gun.

I have a early 90s M110FP in a Choate stock just like the one in the middle. They're built like a tank and very affordable.

Shot action are 4.4 inches there were some old actions that were 4.27. The Savage Long actions are 5.062. All Target actions a short action most are 4.4 but there are some 3.4.

From 1988 to 1997 ALL calibers offered were done in the Long Action only, for the Savage 110.
