Learning as much as I can before I jump on the 99 bandwagon....been looking for a pre war 250-3000 and one that looks....used, not a vintage one. have an old post scope I want to put on it and chase whitetails. Just something about that rifle and caliber....

Welcome. 99 is a good rifle, however, I wouldn’t limit your choosing to Pre-war. Especially for a rifle you want to use for hunting. You’ll pay less & get a better piece, with a 99 made more recently. If it was simply for collecting, I’d say sure, for the nostalgia of collecting. But expecting these older firearms to perform adequately is a different game. Remember, this isn’t an AK. The barrels had no chrome lining. And it was common to use Mercuric primers back then as well. Very common. Most rifles from pre-war have sewer pipe barrels. Even the ones that are in very condition, outwardly, will show significant wear on the inside. Not a big thing for collectors.But I’d say it becomes a matter of ethics when using them to hunt. Collectors guns are for collecting. And shooting on a range maybe, once in a while. Hunting rifles should be accurate enough to kill cleanly.

The 99s are pretty and a cool design. Maybe at some point, like what happened with the Challenger/Camaro, Savage will have a retro shift and return and refine some of their classic designs. Especially with how Henry seems to be making the lever action world more interesting, but why should they have all the fun?
Either way, the cartridge is also not getting the love and attention it once did, but it's still potent, and combined with a retro scope the combination is sure to be striking and functional.
