I only recently purchased my first Savage, an Axis II and not having any experience with the 110 series, I am wondering if the 110 series has the same bolt lift catch as the Axis. I have quite a few Mauser based rifles along with Remington and Winchester and a few others, but none of these experience the “catch” when operating the bolt. Is this purely a Savage design issue?

Please point out where the catch is. I have an Axis and 110 Varmint. Then i can look. Maybe these pics will help you?

It is hard bolt lift. Will not wear in. It is one of the biggest problems with Savage but does not effect accuracy with the exception of moving you off target to work the action.

Yes, what you are feeling is Savage’s infamous “Bolt Lift” issue. Savage fans have pleaded with them for years to fix the issue. Unfortunately, it’s gone unanswered. So the DIY’rs have figured out ways to lesson the lift. Fred made the Bolt Lift Kit. Others have added various things like polishing, spring changes, etc. Over time it does smooth out some, naturally. However, it’s never fully gone. And the Axis seems to have it worse than the 110. It’s a small annoyance and ya get used to it, as it doesn’t cause any problems performance wise.
