Range Day

Last week, I bought a used Leupold VX-Freedom 2-7X33 scope to replace the Nikon ProStaff 4X scope I originally mounted on the Savage 93G. Although the Nikon is a nice scope, I wanted just a bit more magnification and I got a good deal of the Leupold. I mounted the Leupold on the Savage yesterday and it, at least in my opinion, is a handsome set up.

I bought a couple of spare magazines, a 5-round and a 10-round, from Gun Mag Warehouse and later this morning, I will go to the range to zero the Leupold and try the two new magazines.

Hopefully, the range will be all mine as it usually is. Seldom, maybe 2 or 3 times out of every 10 range trips, is another club member(s) there when I am.

Off topic, you mentioned having a Nikon. I used to really like Nikon scopes. Many years ago, my first “good” quality scope was a Nikon. I used crap scopes before it. And back in the day, early 2000’s, Chinese scopes were truly abysmal! Nothing like today, how there are actually some good very, VERY nice Chinese scopes. No, they were just really bad back then. So I had this Nikon at the time, which was I think one of the 3.5-14x50SF. And the Glass was simply on a different level from anything I previously had used. Fast forward some years, and I was surprised when Nikon just one day decided they weren’t making scopes anymore. Then I saw a notice that anyone who had a warranty claim with their scope could get a voucher towards any spotting scope or binoculars. LOL!

I too was surprised. At the time, I wondered if it was something to do with avoiding liability but that never really made sense to me. I never heard of anyone getting shot by a rifle scope.

In all probability, it was a marketing decision or a production facilities decision.

If I took the photos, I wouldn't know how to transfer them to the computer and further, I wouldn't know how to transfer them from the computer to the forum. Maybe when one of the grandkids visits, I may ask for tech assistance.

Returned from the range a short time ago and as I anticipated, I was the only one there. Sprinkle/drizzle of rain but not enough rain to make me quit. It was enough rain to make me appreciate the roof over the benches. About 1100, it stopped raining and the sun emerged from the clouds and it began to turn into a sauna. It is Summer and this is South Carolina.

I am always pleasantly pleased with the accuracy this rifle is capable of. If I do my part (it still happens on rare occasion) it will put three rounds of Federal Small Game 50 gr. JHP ammo in less than an inch at 50 meters. Certainly minute of armadillo or minute of coyote and anything smaller than that would be wasted on me.

It was… marketing. The last scopes Nikon made were the Nikon “Black”, as seen below. I almost purchased one, but glad I didn’t. Truth be told, they simply couldn’t keep up with the like of Vortex, Athlon, Bushnell & the others that have emerged, which are simply SCOPE companies. Nikon’s big claim to fame is their camera & lens optics lines. They are a Japanese company with high end camera lens optics. However, they could not match the price point for the optics, based on the changing advancements in Rifle scope technology. To continue with their Japanese line scopes, they would have had to price themselves in direct competition to the likes of Nightforce. And that would have been a money LOSING battle for them. Again, they tried with the release f the model “Black” line of rifles scopes. Below is the X1000 6-24x50. They were made in the Philippines, which had been historically better than Chinese made scopes. But with a $700 price tag, it didn’t so well. People were purchasing the $400-$900 Vortex, Athlon & Burris lines, probably 1000 to 1 or MORE, over the Nikon Black models. And so, in 2019, Nikon bid the rifle scope market adeu!

It’s super easy! You have a smart phone yeah? Simply take a picture with it. Then on the phone, go to https://imgbb.com/

Press Upload Image and choose “Library” from drop down list. This will bring up the pics on your smart phone. Choose the pics you want and upload.
Then, click on the image which takes you to the screen below. Choose “BBcode”, as I highlighted. Hit “copy”, then paste it directly in the thread.

I have a lot of respect for Nikon lenses and had lots of them for my 4 Nikon Bodies back in the day.
I never felt that they were committed to their scope line so I never bought any of them, even though they made great glass.
They always seemed to be working 5 years behind everyone else.

Years ago, I had a 4-16x Nikon Monarch that I thought was a great scope. I had it on my Ruger #1 300WM hunting rifle. It cost me a nice bull elk.
I could see the elk just fine in my binoculars, but not in the scope. The lens coatings that Nikon used made it impossible to see things in low light conditions. I replace it with a Swarovski 4-16x scope and never missed another low light hunting opportunity.

I agree, a "handsome" setup will be nice with an image.
