Savage Revel Rifles

Can someone with first-hand experience comment on the Savage Revel lever-action rifles? Pros and cons?

I am interested in a lever-action rimfire and the Savage Revel line interests me because it has a metal receiver (aluminum) which I consider to be a plus.

I once had a Rossi lever-action rimfire rifle but I never warmed up to it because it seemed to be a youth rifle. I haven't bought a Winchester product in decades so the Winchester lever-action line (Ranger?) doesn't interest me either.

I think it boils down to a Henry or a Savage product.

Thoughts?

When I was about to turn 18, I wanted a Marlin 30-30 Lever gun so bad! I always envisioned. But I ended up with a Savage Model 111 Combo in 30-06. My first.

Sorry, no Revel. But I’ll be honest. It’s a Rimfire. Can’t really go wrong with a Rimfire plinker. If you dig it, grab one!

I finally bought a Marlin 366 XLR with a 24-in SS barrel in .30-30 and put a Happy Trigger on it.
The XLR was made to shoot the Hornady MonoFLex 140 gr and FTX 160 gr bullets with the flex tips using LeveRevelution powder.
With classic .30-30 ammo with the rounded lead tips like the Sierra Pro Hunter 2000 or the Hornady Accu-bond 3035 bullets, it could barely break 2 inch groups at 100 yards.
With the Hornadys and LeveRevolution powder, the MonoFlex 140s flirted with 0.5 inches and the FTX 160s got down into the 0.4s.

As far as I was concerned, that was phenomenal for a .30-30.
Unfortunately, with that kind of accuracy, I was really not interested in taking it any further and it got retired to my gun safe.

I don't think Mossberg makes any rimfire products at this time but I may be wrong. I have always thought of Mossberg as primarily a shotgun company.

It's a moot point for me now. Last Friday, after posting the above, I went to local guns shops in my area and did not find a single Savage, Henry, Winchester, Browning or Rossi lever rimfire on the shelf until I got to a local pawn shop. However, even if a Browning rimfire had been on the shelf, it probably would have been out of the reach of my pitifully meager wallet.

The pawn shop had three or four Henry lever rimfire rifles on the shelf. One new and three used. The new one was nice but of the used Henry rifles, one appeared to be in almost new condition and was priced significantly less than the new one. I bought it on the "if ya' snooze, ya' loose" theory.

It is the basic Henry H001 in .22 S/L/LR. Apparently the prior owner did not invest in cleaning equipment. It took quite a bit of effort to clean the bore but eventually, it came out as clean as a mirror. Breakfree CLP, many patches and a bronze brush later.

I really wanted to hold and inspect a Savage Revel and I may find one later but I hated to leave the Henry and loose a chance. That said, am not against a Revel rifle if I stumble on one later.

Since I last posted in this thread, I traded the Henry Classic in .22 S/L/LR for the same rifle but in .22 WMR. I am sure I have more in it cost wise than I should but I wanted one in .22 WMR.

I mounted an old Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 4X fixed power rifle scope on it and tested it with about ten or so different brands, weights and bullet styles of ammunition I had on hand. It proved to prefer Federal Small Game 50 gr. JHP ammo. So far, I am pleased with it but I still want to look at a Revel lever action.

My wallet has moved from ICU to a regular room but it still is not ready to leave the hospital but if I stumble on a deal on a Revel, it may make a miraculous recovery.
