This post is about restoring a nearly ruined SxS savage shotgun barrel set. The shotgun was a Savage private label gun sold through Sears Roebuck circa 1950s. Apparently a barrel obstruction occurred which blew the side out of the left barrel. Wasn't my gun thankfully. Barrels were originally 30" Mod/Full configuration.
The salvage operation started by using a hacksaw and removing the front 9 inches of damage. Then I squared up the barrel muzzle to the rib. I then deburred the muzzles inside and out . I filled the void between the rids with steel wool as a dam. Then I poured lead into the opening and smoothed it down flush. A good cold blue was applied and looked acceptable. This left 21" of barrel usable. Obviously it is devoid of any choke in either barrel, plenty good for 20-30 yard shots on bunnies, rabbits and even close flying doves. By the way the barrels still "ring" like a tuning fork indicating they are sound.
