Stevens Favorite

Ive been enjoying these of late. I have noticed while looking for my next purchase that many of these have what appear to be random hammer marks on the receiver. On the sides, the top, or both. I’m trying to figure out why. Was that a popular way to address a stuck cartridge. That seems like an ineffective method.

Any theories or experience with this?

I have a Stevens crack shot. Made in 1918. It's an accurate little rifle. In the pic is my other Stevens vintage 22's.
