12FV Build "almost there"

Well it's "almost there". I can shoot it now anyways. Worst case of procrastination I've had since retiring.

Savage 12FV receiver
Savage bolt from Midway USA (I don't like shiny polished bolts. Dulled the jeweling to a matte finish. Will blue later)
Glades Armory Tactical bolt handle
Stock Savage trigger polished engagement. Have not measured yet. Will shoot some before further adjustment.
Savage 308 heavy varmint barrel cut down to 20" 1:10 recessed crown. It was unused. Will most likely be replaced in time. Curious how it will do over some time.
Hogue full bed block stock/blind mag
Vortex Venom 5-25x56 FFP w/EBR 7C MOA
Vortex rings
Harris swivel bipod for field. Will shoot off bag/rest at range.

I have a couple cases of FGMM to ring it out.

This was inspired by a local LE Special Unit Team. I know a couple of the guys pretty well.

Looks a bit like my 10 FP Law Enforcement model that I bought in 2008. It also had a hidden mag and came with a 24-in barrel.
Shot the factory barrel out and had Savage replace it with a 24-inch target barrel in late 2010.
Barrel cost a whopping $163, threaded for a suppressor or brake.
Still have it and it is still producing, with about 10,000 rounds through the action and it is now mounted in a MDT Oryx chassis with an AICS removeable mag.
I am considering changing the barrel again.
This time it will be with a Shilen Select Match, probably 26-inches.

Not sure what the barrel came off of. It was 26 in before cutting.

Short barrels have a certain application.....

Hopefully I can get it out next week. Parts guns always seem to function great when you put them together but have little surprises at the range.....

I'm pretty hard on my optics. Was a tournament predator hunter and varmint shooter (not a clean pretty boy sitting next to a Denali on a fold out portable "bench") and definitely abused some scopes in a harsh way in very harsh seasonal conditions. I found, for the money that Vortex and Hawke provided the best options, as did other's like minded. Part of my military career (back then) was all Leupold.....and, briefly, everyone sit down....a scope made by Tasco. Now it's all across the board with many makes. I can tell you, many smaller LE branches have gone with Vortex over the years for certain applications and it served them well. Yes I understand the budget and political crud. Higher tier Vortex has passed the test. On a "amateur" level from my experience Vortex and Hawke passed the test easily.....and saved some bucks.

But if you have the expected funds laying around with no better use (I have a liking for decent bourbon/cigars) then go for top tier optics and a top tier platform to mount it on. I would if I could......but Uncle Sam or some Department is no longer providing anything to me for free

I don’t have a problem with Vortex. Hey, they make XM157 optic used on the US Army’s M7 rifles. And the Razor Gen II & III were the Number 1 PRS Competition scope choice, in years past. The Venom, Viper & Strike Eagle are the exceptional quality Chinese optics made. They aren’t my preference, but they have many more satisfied customers than those who are not.

I've gone retro on my target rifles, 24x target dot B&L Balvars with internal windage/elevation turrets. The reticle dot is the exact same diameter as the dot on the official CBA 100yd target as viewed thru the scope. If I can't see the dot I'm dead center.

My 12FCV (204) has a lower tier Viper. That thing has taken a lot of hogs and been battered around quite a bit. I really need to get it out soon. It's been awhile.

Finding this forum has really got my Savage juices going again. I only have three but I really like them. Even though one is unfired. But that will change now that it's complete

Don’t bad about having three! I only have ONE! And a bunch of loose parts. Although I might grab a 2026 Bare Action here soon.

I used to have multiple of the same rifles, handguns, years ago. Until one day I realized I couldn’t afford to feed them all. Then I also realized, I’m not a collector! So I WAY streamlined my Arsenal to the firearms I knew I wanted in the calibers/cartridges I loved.

Nope. Just a plain Jane Viper 6.5-20x50 on a plain Jane 12 FCV 204. Only thing I did was add a Glades bolt handle/knob, polish the trigger and give it a quick rattle can job. My favorite ground grizz eliminator. LOVES 39gr SBKs (now SVKs).

I do have a Viper HS-T 6-24x50 on a REM 700 6.5CM build though.
