I was wondering if any of you who are getting older (especially those over 70) are noticing that lapses in concentration are causing issues with your ability to maintain accuracy.

I am over 82 and, for the last couple of years, even though my accuracy appears to have remained about the same overall, I have noticed more and more cases where about 1 group out of every 4 has one round going astray and enlarging the group. All my groups are shot at 100 yards. Our range is limited by space and by being in a pretty populated area of Northern Virginia. That is probably just as well, as my ability to control recoil has diminished with age and, if I were going to shoot out to 300+ yards and beyond, I would probably opt for my 6.5mm CMs.

I generally load 25 rounds for each load and shoot a couple of sighters to get my aim point established for each new load, which is usually a different bullet or a different seating depth. So, I generally measure 4 groups for each load that I reload.

For example, since November 1st, with my new Shilen Select Match 416R 1:7 twist barrel in my Savage 12 FV .223 in an MDT LSS chassis using a Leupold 45X Competition scope, I have shot 128 5-round groups to an average of 0.216 with a group size standard deviation of 0.032.

Looking at only the groups since November that didn’t have the one shot that opened them up (shooter Induced variations), there were 49 groups that averaged 0.184 with a standard deviation of 0.020. That is what I am trying to do for every group.

Most of the time, my messed-up groups are in the mid .220s, but occasionally the groups grow to .260 to .270 if I really mess up. I have only shot two groups over 0.300 since I have been shooting this new barrel, Since April 2025, and those were just after the break-in period. Actually, the first 40 or so groups after the 50-round break-in process were more me trying to figure out the barrel than trying to attain the accuracy that the barrel has shown since.

After shooting for about 100 groups with some really great groups and some relatively poor groups, I finally realized that to get the accuracy that the barrel could deliver, I had to aim very precisely. With most of my factory barreled rifles, the barrels weren’t able to put rounds exactly where they were aimed so I didn’t notice. But once I realized that the barrel put the shots where they were aimed, I started to really work on precise aiming.

Probably, the best lesson came when l shot the first four rounds in a group in exactly the same hole. I couldn’t see any difference in the hole after each shot and I had even looked all over the target after the second shot to see if there was a bullet hole somewhere else before I continued shooting. I had shot two sighters first and then proceeded to put the next four shots in exactly the same hole. I knew that there was some drop in POI when the barrel got hot but, since I was on a such a roll, I shot the 5th round anyway. It was in the same hole but just slightly lower and I could see that the hole got slightly larger at the bottom. That 5-round group measured 0.055. I then realized that I really had to do my part to get really good accuracy.

I have noticed that a I got a stray round when I have seemed to skip a step in my set-up routine, or twitch a bit as I was pulling the trigger, or didn’t adjust my position after the recoil from the previous shot.

Also, this new barrel is so accurate that variations of a reticle width during aiming can change a group from measuring under 0.200 to measuring over 0.250 with a single shot.

I have also noticed starting in November, when the morning temperatures got colder and dropped into the 30s a few times, and in December and January, with the morning temperatures often in the 20s and low 30s, that the winter monthly averages of 0.212 to 0.222 got larger compared to July to October with monthly averages of 0.207 to 0.208. The bullet mix was about the same so I don’t think that was the difference. Perhaps the colder conditions keep me from concentrating as effectively.

The impact of my shooter induced variations on the overall average isn’t great since it doesn’t occur with every group, but it seems to be an indicator of my inability to maintain consistency and that concerns me. Since I record all my data and try to determine which bullets, powders, seating depths, jumps and bullet exit times perform best, these ‘shooter induced variations’ are causing bias in my data and masking what performs the best.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I might do to get my shooter induced variations under better control?
 
At one time I had eyes like a Hawk. At 74 they are not nearly as good as they once were. They will still pass a drivers license test with no glasses, but I can tell that they are not as good as they once were.

CFJunkie looks like you have the old 223 doing very well. We shoot a Short Course Match at the club the 4th Saturday of the month. Centerfire is shot at 100 yards and 200 yards, with rimfire in between. You would have a very good time shooting with us. I run the match, so I do not get to shoot.

My accuracy 223 is a Stainless Steel 700 Remington with a Brux Barrel. It is in a Bell and Carlson M40 Stock with an Accuracy International Magazine Conversion. For glass it has an older Leupold 8.5-25X50 Long Range Tactical Mill Dot by Premier Reticle. Leupold only offered the MK IV as a Tactical Scope at that time. It was built as a Tactical/Varmint and 600 FTR Rifle. It has pretty much ended up as a Range Paper Puncher. It has done well in that roll. It is fun to shoot rifles that shoot well. It would be nice to have a high quality 45X Target Scope like yours to see exactly what a Rifle is capable of doing.

That's some great shooting there, CF! Sometimes, when your shooting with that sort of accuracy, a lighter crisp trigger can make a difference.
What trigger are you using and pull weight? Is it a Savage red blade?
 
The Varmint/Target trigger on the .223 12 FV is set at 1 lb. 11 oz. but it is probably getting lighter than that with wear, since it has been showing some sensitivity to side pressure now that the weather has turned cold.
From my experience, that side pressure sensitivity, which causes the trigger to lock up, usually occurs when the trigger gets close to 1 lb. 7oz. Minimum recommended is 1 lb. 6 oz.
If that lock up continues, I will probably set the trigger back to 1 lb. 10 oz.

I just had to do that with my 12 FV 6.5mm CM Varmint/Target trigger.
The Precision Target Trigger (red blade) on my 12 LRP 6.5mm CM came from the factory at 10 oz.
 
First of all, I can remember when I could see 224" bullet holes at 100 yds with a cheap 3x9 scope. Today, at 65 yrs, I struggle with 24X.
More than anything, my old eyes are holding me back.

I'm going on 83, God willing, and shoot a 45X Leupold Competition with my .223 to be able to see the holes clearly.
With my 6.5mm I use a 12-42x56mm Benchrest Night Force and on the .308s I use 8-32x56mm Benchrest Night Force.
Those larger holes are a bit easier to see.
I only wish the Leupold had a larger front optic - the Night Force scopes with the 56mm front optics gather a lot more light and are brighter around 8-9 AM when the winds are lighter.

I've moved to shooting a pair with the target trigger which I've become very fond of. Late summer I pulled my 12FV in 6.5CM out to prep for a match and was pleasantly surprised at how crisp the varmint/LE trigger felt.

I shoot short range (100yds) match with cast bullets in sanctioned CBA competition. My best group with the 6.5CM I put nine into into .671" the last one opened it to .882". Still a great group IMHO.

With my 6.5mm I use a 12-42x56mm Benchrest Night Force and on the .308s I use 8-32x56mm Benchrest Night Force.
Those larger holes are a bit easier to see.
I only wish the Leupold had a larger front optic - the Night Force scopes with the 56mm front optics gather a lot more light and are brighter around 8-9 AM when the winds are lighter.
If only my ball and chain would let me buy 42x scope!

As I age, I find the quality of my triggers and scopes help make up for my declinging eyesight and physical abilities ( largely caused by a combination of Diabetes , Afib and PVC conditions).
That said, with groups like you report, I'm not seeing a "need" for change to anything in your wheelhouse.
As an aside, can I ask what you are feeding your LRPV? I've been working on handloads myself in 68,73 adn 77 flavors.
 
Take a look at the Athlon Argos series of scopes. I have the 8-34X56 and also a 10-40X56. Use them both for shooting in our local league matches out to 300yds. At this distance they both perform beautifully.
Decent scopes. Especially if you keep them under 30x. I own both. The 10-40 with SFP reticle sits on my CZ 457 MTR. For some reason, I feel it just belongs there. In general, I'm a big Athlon fan. I have them in the Argos, Heras, Midas Tac, Ares BTR, Ares ETR and Cronus flavors. Admitedly, the Ares ETR's in 4.5-30 have grown to become my favorite.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have also migrated to higher power as I age. I have always had pretty severe myopia and as I age, moving toward farsightedness has actually helped with my normal vision by reducing my myopia, but I now have to use progressive lenses.
Still, if I manage to do my part, I get some very good results, at least, for me.
Unfortunately, I only do my part less than 40% of the time, and about 10% of the time, I really seem to lose my way. That is what I am trying to overcome.

Can't complain though, I shoot fine when I single feed, and I have to take more time when I single feed so the barrel doesn't heat up as fast.

The only thing I might suggest is to try a scope that isn't quite 45X. For me , as I age, anything avove 35 X or so really fatigues my eyes and has me chsing the crosshair. I ended up settling on scopes that are super bright at 30x. They tend to be much more forgiving in many ways. This has made a difference for me anyway.
 
That might be a problem but I don't think that is my problem.

I have noticed that I have more problems with seeing the reticle on the 32X Night Force, than on the 42X Night Force or the 45X Leupold, so I'm thinking I need the added magnification.

I admit that I used to have some problems with my eyes getting tired with all my scopes until I adjusted the reticle focus on them correctly.
My shooting buddy had the same problem with his eyes getting tired and the problem disappeared when he also adjusted the reticle focus.

Turns out that with a 2nd Focal plane scope, the reticle and the target image may not be in the same optical position so your eye has to adjust focus back and forth to focus on the target or focus on the reticle. That tires your eye out.
I'm not sure that situation holds for a 1st focal plane scope, but I think it might.
The reticle adjustment is really intended to adjust for problems like myopia or far sightedness so people with bad eyes can see the reticle.

Once I made sure the reticle focus was correct on all my scopes and was in the same plane as the target focus, my eyes didn't get tired and I could see the target reticle and the target image clearly all the time.
A lot of shooters that I help at our range as an RSO don't even know that there is a reticle focus on their scopes. They think the adjustment near the eyepiece is a general focus adjustment.
Most lower cost or non-target scopes, without an adjustable objective at the front tube of the scope or a parallax adjustment knob on the left side at the turrets, have a fixed focus for the target image, but almost all, except the really cheap ones, have a reticle adjustment near the eyepiece.
 
I'm a hunter and only shot in competition to keep in practice for hunting seasons. I'll be 68 next month and so far recoil isn't bothering me but I was just diagnosed with cataracts and for the first time, my eyes tested worse than 20/20. I see the difference in my scope picture so I am starting to worry.

Don't really worry until they tell you it is really impacting your ability to see.

I was told that I had cataracts about 25 years ago.
Since I had such terrible myopia, I was looking forward to them putting in the replacement lenses that could improve my vision.

Every year I had an eye exam, they told me the same thing - the cataracts aren't large enough require an operation.
They have been telling me that for 25 years.

Since I am soon to be 83, I probably will never have to have a cataract operation.
Fortunately, aging has actually helped my eyes - instead of becoming farsighted, it has reduced my myopia from 7 diopters to about 1/2 that.
Still have to wear glasses, but I can at least finally see the 'E' on the eye chart.
 
Oh wow! You really over 82 Hal? I had no clue. Kudos my friend.

As for me, it’s not so much age, as it is injury. I’m a bit south of 50yo, but I’m disabled and feel like I’m in my 90’s! I lost my left eye some years ago, and my right has always heavily corrected for many years and also has astigmatism. And YES! I’ve noticed a drastic decrease in my shooting capability. Now, I was never Jerry Miculek, or a “1-hole Pistol Pete”, but I could hold my own in the accuracy department. I didn’t do anything really in Rifle competition. I was always more drawn to pistol & 3-gun competition, which is more about tactical awareness & speed, more than overall accuracy. Hitting a 6” plate, quickly. And it’s all been influenced by my age/disability.

But then, shooting is obviously a Perishable Skill, so it’s simply a matter of when. However, the enjoyment need not ever be lost. 😊
 
I'm not sure if I should be relieved or surprised by the analysis of my results between 2025, the first 5 months of 2026 and the most recent results from June 2026 and the first session in July 2026. I have been expecting to see gradual degradation in accuracy as I age. I will turn 83 this week and have noticed considerable reduction in physical fitness in the first part of this year, so I expected to see some drop in my shooting accuracy.

But to my surprise, over the last two months, shooting with my new Shilen barreled .223 and 6.5mm CM, I have noticed an actual improvement in accuracy.

2026 Jan through May - 0.219 for 215 5-round groups

Savage 12 FV .263 6.5mm CM 28-inch Shilen Select Match 1:8 twist 416R SS barrel at 100 yards;
2025 Sep through Dec - 0.257 for 50 5-round groups
2026 Jan through May - 0.251 for 112 5-round groups
2026 Jun through Jul 6- 0.231 for 47 5-round groups

I can't tell if it is just the warmer weather with no jackets on, or if I actually have improved my accuracy, but the numbers show some improvement.
Interestingly, the standard deviations for the .223 for the three periods were 0.036, 0.035 and 0.033 respectively which would indicate that my accuracy was improving along with my consistency.
But the standard deviations for the 6.5mm CM for the three periods are 0.031, 0.038, and 0.040 respectively which would indicate that my consistency was actually deteriorating since my consistency was better when I had the largest average group sizes.
I looked closer at the June/July .223 data and realized one bad group of 0.300 with the .223 increased the SD by 0.003 from 0.030 to 0.033.
And the June/July 6.5mm CM data had three groups of 0.301, 0.303 and 0.306 that increased the SD by 0.004 from 0.036 to 0.040.
Those larger groups are indications of my shooter induced variations that I am always fighting to eliminate, but never seem to be able to.

I also know that SD gets smaller with a larger sample size and that a few really small groups can actually increase SD.
For the .223 there were 119 groups out of 424 (28.1%) under 0.200 in 2025, 44 groups out of 215 (20.5%) under 0.200 from Jan through May in 2026, and 38 groups out of 56 (67.9%) under 0.200 in Jun through Jul 6th. The percentage improvement in groups under 0.200 was 242% when comparing 2025 to Jun/Jul 2026.

For the 6.5mm CM there were 3 groups out of 50 under 0.200 in 2025 (6.0%), 10 groups out of 112 under 0.200 from Jan through May in 2026 (8.9%), and 11 groups out of 47 under 0.200 (23.4%) in Jun through Jul 6th. The percentage improvement in groups under 0.200 was 390% when comparing 2025 to Jun/Jul 2026.
So it is likely that my consistency actually improved with both rifles but improved more with the .223.

Perhaps, I have just managed to concentrate more and reduce my group sizes and was able to somehow also reduce my shooter induced variations that are always my biggest problem.
 
CFJ,look for; "eye exercises after TBI"... traumatic brain injury. Along with, balance reset after TBI.

The above exercises have really improved my traditional archery(no sight,longbow/recurve) shooting. I was having problems with focus and balance. There's some good information around on this. It just isn't "wrapped" as you would expect... meaning,you won't see any references toward shooting sports. So by reframing the question as, "after TBI"... it starts to get serious press.
 
Only 78 here and It's the concentration that goofs me up. I shoot , what I think, is a good group , then the concentration fumbles and the oops appear. Been happening with me for many years. Maybe I aged sooner than some. Still have a ball shooting even if it's not what it once was. At least I get out and shoot. Always seems to be the last shot or two that wanders. If I start a new target right away it is the same. Can't blame the equipment. Used to call it my , built in, wobble factor. Shot these yesterday afternoon. Still able to take down field mice at 100 yds with the .223. Whatta hobby!

You guys are at once humbling and inspiring. The last time I shot anything under .3 was decades ago with a Savage 12BVSS in .223, 52-grain Matchkings over Varget. I bought this rifle just before the Accutrigger came out, so I installed a Rifle Basix trigger. All these years later, I see Savage still uses a 1:9 twist in this rifle. Now 73, I struggle to get under an inch with a pencil-barreled little Howa Min-1500 in .22 ARC, with 12X SWFA scope. A new lens prescription for my glasses might help a little, but it has been discouraging.
 
I had cataracts for a long time, eye Doc said they were stable so nothing to worry about until it was. I had cataract surgery 10yrs ago and afterward kicked myself for not having it done earlier. I opted for distance priority as I had been using reading glasses with my contacts for over a decade. Tried bi-focal contacts, hated the 2-way compromise on my vision so tossed them after 24hrs.

Absolutely no regrets with my decision to have surgery. No compromise with distance vision which is more important to me than when reading a magazine or tapping keys on my laptop. FWIW I'm almost 70. ;)

My father had the same thing done a number of years before he passed. He had cataracts surgery and after, that was his same sentiment. “Should have done it earlier.” He wore glasses his entire life. And all of a sudden, no glasses or contacts anymore & 20/20 vision. I was jealous because here’s my father without glasses anymore & I still needed my glasses/contacts, or everything was blurry.😂LOL! Even now it’s the same for me. But, then, I don’t have cataracts.😉
