Ya know, I had always wondered why in Vietnam, Carlos Hathcock chose Winchester Model 70 over the Army’s M40, Rem 700 with the 308 (7.62x51), was put into service in 1966 (the SAME year as Carlos Hathcock, in fact.). However, after reading this, I’m wondering if Hathcock chose the Model 70 over the M40 because he (and likely some others), heard stories of John George on Guadalcanal? As George had also served in the Marine Corps. Although, Carlos Hathcock’s Model 70 used a Unertl 8x scope. (Marines came to looove their Unertls for quite some time!)
