6mm GT: The GOAT?

What are some opinions on the 6mmGT? Could this be the perfect 6mm target cartridge? It keeps the same high efficiency and extended barrel life of the 6mmBR, while completely eliminating ALL the feeding/ejection problems inherent with super short cases. What are some thought? Anyone currently using it now, or plan to?

Well, I won’t lie, I posted this halfway Tongue-in-Cheek. Looking at the list of 6mm cartridges, it’s almost ridiculous, how many seemingly overlaps there are. Some of these look identical! Really, I’m all for variety, but really?

CoalCracker, you wondered where 243 is? Here ya go. Am I the only one who finds this almost ridiculous? Btw: This isn’t ALL of them in the Short Action. Then there are also Long Action & even Magnum 6mm cartridges! (Talk about over bore, Barrel Burning words! How about 6mm & MAGNUM!)

A very overlooked cartridge in my opinion. Not just for kids, women or newbies. I like the 243 WIN......I did a combo hunt for Deer/Pigs/Predators in Texas several years back......others packed three different guns for themselves......myself and my youngest son packed just two....his 243 and my 243 and packed one load...85gr Sierra HPBT....and did just fine without excessive baggage.

I’m a fan. I like 243AI even more. And when the barrel is throated to allow long loading the heaviest 6mm pills.

No, I didn’t forget those. Look at my post again. See, I mentioned these were simply the SA choices, and there are also Long Action & Magnum 6mm cartridges.

Oh, yes, I see that. Mea culpa! The need for everyone with a do-it-yourself fixation to come up with a new 6mm cartridge is an old story, going back at least to the 6mm International and fistful of near duplicates. I wonder what the first wildcat 6mm was.

The .240 Super Varminter. Made by Jerry Gebby in the ‘40s. .270 Winchester case necked down.



Obviously there could & likely was one before, but this was the first attention getter in the firearms cartridge world.

I was close.....had to clean off some dusty memory banks and wake up a few brain cells.......

My buddys Father was all things 270...when we got into varmint and predator hunting he talked about it and swore it was better than the "fancy" 243....

Some of us really old guys, who grew up when almost every hunting rifle was a .30-06, got introduced to the .270 Win. when it got a lot of press in hunting mags.
I have a Winchester M70 Select Grade in .270 with a beautiful stock that is my favorite hunting rifle. I also have several .30-06s but I loved the .270.
It's first shot from a cold barrel was always right on my aim point - all you can ask from a great hunting rifle - especially one carried in the Northeast in November.
The second round was touching the first, but each succeeding round was out 1/4 inch at 2 o'clock. But I rarely ever got a chance for more than one shot.
It was not a target rifle, but it was a perfect deer rifle. It loved 140 gr Core-Lokt bullets.

Oh, don’t even need to be all that old my friend. I’m 47, but if you think back, even the 90’s early 2000’s, were MUCH different than today. I started Shooting at 12yo., in 1990. 30-06 was the first high power round I ever fired. Along with 30-30. But things were quite different. It was also very dependent on where you lived. We didn’t have the InterWebs then. Very few people “Online” at that point. Much like Cell phones. Us “regular folk” didn’t have them.

I like the 6mm cartridges. I have multiple 243 Win. and 6mm ARC rifles.

I'm told variety is the spice of life, but I feel sad for today's shooters as they don't get to enjoy the art and knowledge of Wildcatting.
In ten years, they'll probably be only one of the nine 6mm cartridges seen in the photo and it won't have a 6 in it.

Not to sidetrack too far off topic but had a 270 when I lived out west, was hell on everything from coyotes to elk.
Also- is the 6GT basically a 6mm-47L?

Same in the East....not many elk but the 270 is a very versatile round for varmints/predators/deer. Especially if you handload.
