.17 WSM

I have another thread about stocks? Must be all those meds I get from the VA. Lol

Ummmm...yes sir.....guess it's time to see the Doc and inquire about increasing, decreasing or dropping a couple meds....

WSM brags

20gr @ 3000fps
25gr @ 2600fps

That’s pretty impressive for a little Rimfire.

I was looking at starting loads for the hornet but full potential runs roughly 500fps faster on both counts. Considering the same or similar polymer tipped bullet. There is quite a bit more case to work with. And a 30gr I would think hits pretty hard.

That’s not considering the possibility of an “improved” chamber.
I've been reloading 17 WSM, here's some results ...

"Are you reloading fired cases or pulling the bullet and loading the new brass?"
Pulling bullets & using primed cases to reload with new powder. I have Prime All primer on hand, but am still experimenting with adding a binder before priming fired cases.
"What do you use for a shell holder?"
17 Hornet. Not perfect, but works fine to pull/seat bullets.
25 Stevens Wildcat sounds interesting. I lack the resources to attempt such a project!

Btw:, how is that Primall? I’m just starting to save all my spent primers. Try to re-prime them in the future. Do you have your own recipe, or using the one found online?

The Prime-All goes bang when struck with a hammer. I have plenty of factory 17 WSM to pull bullets and use the primed cases to reload in my search for better accuracy. Attached .PDF has lots of primer formulations.

The 25 Stevens is a 25 rimfire strait wall case. If I can straitened out the WSM it should be pretty much identical. A 25acp round nose should be quite similar to the original projectile. Im currently on the prowl for a mold.

I’ll start a separate thread when I make some progress.

Yes, that’s the same information I have. I’m interested in making/using the
EPH 26 formula.

WOW! That case Rim is blown up like a balloon! LOL! That would be worrisome if it was more powder than just about enough to take a fingernail off.😂

Fabbed a cheek riser for my 17 WSM B-Mag out of ½ inch packing foam (firm, not rigid). Tapered the lower edge with an electric carving knife, then smoothed that up with 60 grit sand paper. Secured to cheekpiece comb with RealTree EDGE Duck-Tape. Cheek weld/sight box combination is now great … should help with shot group accuracy.

Isn't prime-all corrosive?

There are several formulas. Some corrosive, done non-corrosive. The original used for a long time, H48 IS corrosive because it contains Potassium Chlorate. I’m looking at the formulas using Lead Hypophosphite, which is NOT corrosive.

However, as long as it’s cleaned with soap/hot water each time, it’s never a problem.

My Savage B-Mag has a defective chamber. Almost all the fired casings stick inside the chamber and require a jewelers screwdriver to pop them loose. I bore scoped the chamber, and found it to be severely grooved from the apparent use of a worn-out reamer during manufacture. I contacted Savage, and they want me to return the entire rifle for evaluation and testing. I only want to return the barreled action.
I took my B-Mag to a gunsmith to inquire about having the barrel (22 inch) cut shorter and re-chambered, but he stated because of the weird configuration of the action to barrel, it would be too much of a hassle to do so.
Does anyone have any information regarding contacting Savage for an exception to returning the entire weapon, or perhaps provide info about a gunsmith I could ship my barreled action to, to have the re chamber accomplished.
Thanks in advance for any help. See pics.

I’ll say this: If someone can do this new Savage 110RF in 17 or 22 WSM, that would pretty sweet. My original thought was doing a custom job to make it 22WMR, but if i was to do it, may as well well refit it for the most powerful Rimfire available.
You would need a much heavier firing pin spring for the 110 RF to ignite those 17 WSM's, and then it would be relegated to a single-shot unless you wanted to open up the magazine port in the bottom of the action and fabricate an all new bottom metal to accept a B-Mag magazine. Not saying it couldn't be done with the right means and motivation, but would be a lot more work than it would ever be worth. Much better off to just get a B-Mag in .17 Hornet or swing a .17 Rem or Fireball barrel onto a S/A 110 (the fireball would also likely be relegated to being a single-shot unless you could figure out how to make a blocked .223 mag feed it reliably.

There's a reason Savage made the B-Mag's 100% cock-on-close rather than cock-on-open - and it's because those nail gun cases the 17 WSM is based on have very thick rims and need a lot more firing pin energy to set them off.

From what I can find most bolt-action rimfire firing pin springs for 22LR, 22 WMR, 17 HMR and 17 Mach 2 are in the 14-18 ft-lb range, whereas the B-Mag is in the 23-25 ft-lb range. IIRC the factory 110 centerfire firing pin springs are in the 25-28 ft-lb range.

Yes, it would take some custom work.
Which is not something I’d be afraid of. However, I really have no interest in Rimfire.

But, where an idea exists, someone will undoubtedly put the work in. 😊
