Several years ago I won a barreled action in an auction. It was a Savage 110 in 30/06. My interest was purely in the action and trigger. After retrieving it from the auction house I stashed it in my shop. Sometime later I was in an unsupervised state and something about Africa crossed my mind and the 300 H&H cartridge came to mind. One thing lead to another and I realized the barrel could be reamed out from 30/06 to 300 H&H easily enough. So a plan was hatched for this project.
Dave Manson provided one of his reamers. Brass was acquired from a Want to Buy Ad on a forum. Numrich Arms provided a left hand rough stock blank that came from Fajin. A large bolt face would be needed and a search began with no results so I modified the existing one. The barrel was reamed for the larger chamber to the correct dimensions. The stock was next with the left bolt slot getting an ebony filler and a new slot cut for right hand bolt. This resulted in a left shooter / right hand action stock. Obviously I'm left handed. Next was figuring out what to do about bottom metal. After a short unsuccessful search I started fabricating something and a base was made and a shotgun trigger bow from the parts bin were mated together, The parts bin yielded a floor plate.
After some labor on various parts and pieces it was time to assemble all of it. Everything came together pretty well .
The result was a semi African plains game rifle in a classic African cartridge. I'll never make it to Africa but there was always an interest. This helped scratch that itch....... All this was done on a shoe string budget and all the work was done in my shop. The stock is still in the finish process. I have developed a good jacketed bullet load to use on the occasional whitetail buck and a cast load was developed to enjoy shooting it. I'm pretty pleased with the results!
