Savage 99 in 32 Win Special

I have a Savage 99 in 32 Special I inherited from my grandfather 40 years ago. I can’t find any info on it online. Every site I’ve been to says Savage never made a 99 in that caliber, yet it’s stamped on the barrel. Has anyone here ever seen one? Is it rare? Thanks

No, the 1899/99 was never actually chambered in 32 Special. The Savage 1899 was chambered in 32-40 Winchester. Many of those were later converted to 32 Special. Also earlier 99’s were also rebarreled with those chambered in 32 Special. Which is what yours likely is.

Look on a Date Code, or Lever Boss Code, (LBC), first. It’s an Oval with a Number & Letter inside, located on the Receiver near the Lever. Like below.


Also, look for a serial number. A picture also would be helpful. We’ll go from there.

The important information in the oval circle is the letter - it is the year code. The digits are simply the inspector's ID. The picture above has an "I" which means it was manufactured in 1957.
